Tammy Williams is walking on a cloud.
Fulfilling a goal a quarter-century in the making, that walk is taking her across the stage – in a College of Charleston graduation ceremony.
Williams, a devoted mother of three, had long prided herself in being a valuable employee, excelling in every position and stockpiling certifications. Unfortunately, the lack of a four-year degree had caused her career to stagnate- a reality that weighed on Williams emotionally: “I personally struggled with the mental burden of having an incomplete regarding my education.” Determined to pursue greater opportunities, Williams obtained an associate degree from Trident Technical College in 2013, and enrolled in the CofC Bachelor of Professional Studies program later the same year.

A licensed property and casualty insurance agent with the East Coast Insurance Group in Summerville, Williams was particularly enthusiastic about the real-world applications of the BPS course content. The skills acquired through Applied Communication and Management courses were particularly relevant to her work as an agency manager, and were helpful in improving client experience. Williams also benefitted from the personalized approach to student experience – something she feels is unique to the School of Professional Studies – and her relationships with fellow students: “…my previous college experience was impersonal and uneventful. (In the BPS program), I’ve worked with and bonded with many students who have enhanced the quality of my education.”
As a working mother, Williams – who opted to maintain a full course load – was thrust into a challenging balancing act. She credits the support of her family, and the variety of course-delivery options available through the SPS, with allowing her adhere to her desired graduation timeframe. She emphasizes the need to keep sight of one’s goals, and offers, “…Life happens to each of us… we may be waylaid, but must never give up.” Having gained considerable insight during her time as an SPS student, Williams shares, “I am realizing the purpose of higher education: self discovery, increased emotional and mental capacity, exposure to diverse individuals, and a desire to continue learning more.”
With her diploma in hand, Tammy Williams is looking forward to giving back to her community – particularly local high school students. Williams has already inspired three members of a younger generation: “My children are further energized,” she says, “and actively seeking degrees to insulate their futures.”
As for her own academic journey, Williams’ sights are on the horizon: she hopes to pursue a graduate degree in the near future.
